What is this fate?

I had some very intense life conversations with a few people over this long weekend and it wasn't until I got back to Cowtown that I started thinking about it. I've always had this inkling of a feeling that what happens down the road is guided by yourself, but the end result is always the same no matter how much you try to avoid it. Needless to say, as an accountant, this type of uncertainty really ticks me off, but it's a reality you need to face. However, if the end result is the same, then what's the point of trying to reach something greater?
