HK = Organization Haven = Chaos Galore

Written night of: Wed, August 27, 2008
Ok so my first official day in HK doing stuff that a normal Hong Kongian would do. There were some frustrations, but overall, a really fun time. I spent the rest of the morning staring out the window into the harbor and it's really beautiful in the morning. I also had a minor freak out b/c i realized that my Apple plug (3 prong) didn't fit into the adaptor I had brought. no being able to charge your laptop... a HUGE deal. I solved it though... keep reading for more details. I did a lot of errands with my aunt over here and she is obsessed with 2 things that worked to my benefit: 1) room accessory (aka organization) shopping and 2) making sure this was done at a cheap price. It was crazy, we literally went up and down one building so that we could save 6 HKD (that's less than a dollar in Canada). I guess that's where all these HK peeps get all the money to spend on fashion. O and my mac plug, i found one that could fit all adaptors no matter how many prongs for 8HKD! At first I heard the guy say 100 HKD and I was prepared to take out my money... wow am I ever worried about getting ripped off good here. I've also realized (people have told me this before) that EVERYONE pretty much dresses to go out. I'm not sure whether it's b/c it's a work week, but it's a HK thing, and maybe these styles are the "casual" look. I'm guessing it's the latter and if this is the case I am screwed... since I've only brought 2 dressy-type shirts and NO dress plants. Boy this is very different from our definition of casual in Canada where Lululemon is considered a dress up from normal work out clothes. However, some of the "fob" fashions are pretty damn good... but they're probably the really expensive stuff from the designer stores. I checked out H&M today, and I wasn't THAT impressed... the styles are very different but it's still the same prices as in Canada. But we'll see... I want to check out more local stores since I heard they're cheaper. Woot the cheapness is already setting in. But it's crazy cause you can get an entire meal for $3 CDN over here with a drink. That makes me very excited but I'm really starting to miss veggies and my mom's cooking.
I'm going to get all my registration stuff done tomorrow... and I met some Canadians already! There are 2 on my floor, and a 3rd one too. I wonder if it was a coincidence or fate that brought us together... lol. Anyways, hopefully I'll have more time this weekend to do some touristy things to see the city. I've learned how to take the MTR though, and can i say... AMMMAAAZZZIIINNNGGG... and students get 1/2 price! I'm sorry Calgary transit, you have absolutely no game on the MTR. I could go on and on about the cheap prices over here but it'll take a while so I won't bore you with the details.
But i got my room all set up and get some AC pumping. O and so my first stab at independence bus riding... i got off WAY to early and ended up running/walking for like 20 mins. It was not that pleasant with the heat and humidity but it actually got my mind off stuff and was relaxing. However, don't ask me to do that at 3:00 in the afternoon or I would fall down from heat exhaustion. Anywhoo, more to come and pictures.

Yay for blogging on my birthday!

MTR = amazing indeed!

Interesting how close 8 and 100 really do sound! - good call on not paying a gazillion dollars more!
