You wake up to people cheering about Starr Hall? Yes apparently that is the norm over here... although i think i'm supposed to be one of those people doing the cheering. I shouldn't be surprised, but i'm only used to this when there's a conference :P (view from my dorm is on the right... i officially have decided that I want to live by the ocean and my dorm is on the right)
So one of the highlights of my day yesterday was to get my internet working again and it works in my dorm too! First thing we went to the Global Cafe to get registered as international students. One of the things about living here is that you desperately crave sandwiches and salads... so i spent the same amount buying a tiny sandwich as a rice with bbq pork & duck and a drink. It was sooo worth it though ;) I got to explore campus and i found that all the buildings were interconnected in some way. It was interesting trying to explore it. But it's good b/c it gives you a break from the heat.
Campus is really close to my hall... maybe less than a 5 minute walk. However, by the time you get there, you're already drenched in sweat. I think that's why we carry around those little packets of paper - to be presentable to people that you meet for the first time. The campus is really beautiful though with an amazing view. It was interesting how there are so many areas outside (i.e. when you wait for lecture theatres and stuff). B/c in Canada everything is always indoors... but then again there's -30 degree weather as well. I stumbled upon the Starbucks on campus next to the main library, and was very excited.
After all the administrative stuff, I went down to Causeway Bay/Central to buy a lamp from Ikea. It was insane how busy it was down there... everyone is in a rush to go shopping. When i was taking a picture in central, people wouldn't stop to let us take a picture. You have to quickly take it amidst the walking through of people. But we got some good ones (see below).
Another thing i'm not used to is the "tea time" and then "dinner time" meals. So we ate this japanese noodle crepe (really good, syrup with mayonnaise on top of fried noodles... mmmm the clogging of arteries begins) at 6:00pm which i assumed would be dinner. And then at 8:00pm we had taiwanese noodles (yes Henry and Sean, it was absolutely DELICIOUS!). It was really cool too b/c there was this complex that just had restaurants at Central with every kind of food you could want. It was really fancy inside too... these restaurants would cost at least 20 bucks a meal in Canada, but it was only $3 a dish. I could eat those Taiwanese noodles for a while until i got sick of them...
Anyways, need to get ready for the international student orientation today... I need to work on uploading pics on fb, it's taking such a long time...
